Matrosov Cruises Through Hotel Carpeting
by Fyodor Gogolev
Alexey Matrosov, a former Russian Amateur and a reigning Russian PGA Champion, triumphed at the season-ending Office Golf event. In Russia with its long winters and very limited knowledge of the game Office Golf proved to be an efficient way to promote interest to golf. Following successful tournaments at the LockoBank, Bor resort and Shishkin gallery the season-ending event was staged at the Sheraton hotel. After the "amateur" division was won by Vitaly Verchenov and Matrosov was the best among "pros", they played a 9-hole match for the universal title. Despite being allocated a 4-stroke handicap Verchenov failed to resist a challenge from a more experienced adversary. Matrosov received a wealth of prizes, including recent model of Benefon telephone. Women’s division was won by Yevgenia Yefimova in a play-off against Maria Verchenova (Vitaly’s daughter). Many prizes were awarded in various categories by sponsor companies: Kronos (golf equipment), Articoli (perfumes), Oriental Express (exclusive accessories), Tobacco Gallery (cigars and accessories), Wine Club (French wines), Pernod Ricard Rouss (whiskeys and cognacs).
