To Tunisia with Carthage Trophy
By Fedor Gogolev
A golf travel for the Russian golfers and golf writers to Tunisia in April yielded a pleasant discovery - golf facilities and a mild climate make this country situated in the North of Africa as attractive as Spain, Cyprus or any other Mediterranean European resort. The idea of such a marvelous trip was promoted by the Tunisian Ministry of Tourism, the Tunisian Embassy in Moscow and the "Golf Against Drugs" International Foundation.
In the richest province of Tunisia - Sousse - there is El Kantaoui Golf Club which includes "Panorama" and "Sea" golf courses, where the international tournament Carthage Trophy took place. Both courses are very picturesque and difficult to play. They are perfectly designed and well-groomed to enjoy the game. Igor Korchak from Moscow won the tournament. For the award ceremony a lot of high-ranked officials were present -Deputy Mayor of Sousse and the President of Tunisian Golf Federation among them.
There are eight golf clubs and eleven complete golf courses in Tunisia, seven of them designed by an American architect Ronald Fream. More then five millions tourists from all over the world visit this country every year.
The Tunisian Minister of Tourism held a reception for the Russian guests the day before the tournament started. He stressed that the visit of the Russian golfers was the result of the strengthening of friendly ties between the two countries.

Korea
By Tom Callahan
This year 21 South Korean players are on the LPGA Tour and it would be an understatement to claim that Koreans have succeeded in America. They really burst into the LPGA Tour to conquer the top positions leaving ladies from so-called "Vanishing Americans" behind. By the way, among women golfers competing with men only the Korean, Se Ri Pak, made her cut. What is the secret of their rapid invasion and - it may seem rather strange - why are there so many Korean women and so few Korean men?
One of the best Korean woman players Se Ri Pak considers it was she who prompted all the other Koreans to play golf. Her immediate winning of two major championships let them believe that they can do it also. But Se Ri gives her father his due for pushing her. Korean parents want their children to be No. 1 - no matter what field of human activity is - and their offsprings really work hard because there exists only one thing difficult to teach them - to be careless and playful kids. All of them dream of great achievements and they are supported by their fathers, who are the authority on everything in Korea - that is the way the culture is. Amazingly enough, along with that Korean men can admit that women in this country are better then men. These ladies are wiser, clever and, of course, more patient.
As for Korean men players,
K.J. Choi - really hard worker - is the best of them. Korean boys have to join the Army and they spend a few years in the university, so when they go back to golf, it is too late. How ever, the reason of why there are so many super Korean lady golfers and so few boys may lie far apart from that.

We Know What You Did Last Summer
By John Hawkins
The interview features Jim Furyk, one of the most non-typical golfers on PGA Tour with such an unusual swing that one can’t help critisizing it. But with nine PGA Tour victories and $19 million Jim Furik is capable to feel confident even if rude hecklers in galleries continue to bother him. Jim assures that it doesn’t even matter to him whose golf swing on the tour is considered to be perfect.
He used to like gambling when his prize money left much to be desired. This major champion is afraid of being injury-prone - it could stop his career - and it makes him a little bit vulnerable. He adores the game but can’t even imagine himself as a golf bureaucrat - he strives to make golf history, not policy. He is convinced there is the only way to get better - to deal with people who are better.

Tour Review
By Alexey Nikolov
There is a unique competition in golf which embraces virtually every aspect of the game. It gets no coverage by the media, and has no official prize money declared; however, the total purse amounts to eleven-figure digits. This superior competition is everlasting and a winner has no chance to enjoy the triumph for long - even a brief respite may prove costly as the opponents are ever on alert. This competition is a perpetual Battle for The Spectator and the main competitors in this battle are PGA Tour and PGA European Tour. To be precise the relationship between these tours is better defined as "co-opetition" since it involves as much cooperation as competition. This basic principle of today’s business is fully applicable to professional golf. Both tours cooperate to enlarge the pie and compete to divide it up.
In the USA the EDS Byron Nelson Championship featured the favorites - Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Erni Els, Phil Mickelson - to attract the attention of mega-sponsors and - accordingly - spectators to influence the ratings. The answer of European Tour was to hold BMW Asian Open in China - the best bet to withstand the rival’s challenge. The European Tour step by step goes to its objective - to become the World Tour incorporating South Africa, Australia, South-East Asia and now - China, the most dynamic and attractive market for the golf business.
